Claude subscription vs API: what it really costs, and where the breakeven is
Claude Pro costs $20 and Max $100 or $200 a month. On Opus 5.5 API rates the plan pays for itself in about 7, 34 or 67 agent sessions. The maths, sourced.

If you use Claude Code or Claude-powered agents more than a few times a week, a Claude subscription is cheaper than the API. Pro costs $20 a month and Max costs $100 or $200, while Anthropic's own Claude Code docs say the average developer on the API spends about $13 per active day, or $150 to $250 a month. The API wins for light use, unattended automation, products you sell to others, and Fable on a small budget.
This guide shows the breakeven from Anthropic's published prices, checked on 5 October 2026, and gives you a way to run the comparison on your own usage in under a minute.
What does each Claude option cost today?
All prices are from claude.com/pricing and the Claude Platform pricing docs, read on 5 October 2026, in US dollars before tax.
| Option | Price | How you pay | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Pro | $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually ($200 up front) | Flat | Five-hour session limit plus a weekly limit |
| Claude Max 5x | $100 a month (monthly only) | Flat | 5x Pro's per-session allowance, plus a weekly limit |
| Claude Max 20x | $200 a month (monthly only) | Flat | 20x Pro's per-session allowance, plus a weekly limit |
| Team premium seat | $100 per seat a month annually, $125 monthly | Flat per seat | 5x a standard Team seat |
| API, Opus 5.5 | $4 input, $20 output, $5 cache write, $0.20 cache read (per million tokens) | Per token | None beyond rate limits |
| API, Sonnet 5.5 | $2 input, $10 output, $2.50 cache write, $0.20 cache read | Per token | Same |
| API, Fable 5.1 | $10 input, $50 output, $12.50 cache write, $0.25 cache read | Per token | Same |
Cache write prices above are for the five-minute cache. Batch jobs get 50% off, and US-only inference costs 1.1x.
Two things changed recently. On 22 September Anthropic launched Opus 5.5 at $4 and $20 per million tokens, 20% below Opus 5, and says it costs 40% less than Opus 5 on typical workloads. In the same post it raised five-hour usage limits on Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans and gave subscribers a one-time limit reset they can save and use when they choose. Cheaper API tokens move the breakeven toward the API; bigger plan limits move it back.
How much does an agent session cost on the API?
Agents are expensive because they loop. Every turn re-sends the conversation, the tool definitions and whatever files the agent has read, then adds new input and writes output. Prompt caching makes the repeated part cheap, but it is still billed.
Here is one illustrative one-hour coding session. It is our own example built on Anthropic's list prices, not a measured workload:
- 30 turns
- 100,000 tokens of cached context read on each turn (3 million cache reads)
- 8,000 new tokens added to the cache each turn (240,000 cache writes)
- 2,000 output tokens each turn (60,000 output)
| Model | Cache reads | Cache writes | Output | Session total | 40 sessions a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Opus 5.5 | $0.60 | $1.20 | $1.20 | $3.00 | $120 |
| Sonnet 5.5 | $0.60 | $0.60 | $0.60 | $1.80 | $72 |
| Fable 5.1 | $0.75 | $3.00 | $3.00 | $6.75 | $270 |
Forty sessions is two a day across 20 working days. Real sessions vary a lot: long-context work, many subagents or high effort settings all push the numbers up, and a short question costs cents.
Where is the breakeven between a Claude plan and the API?
Divide the plan price by the cost of a session. Using the sample session above:
| Plan | Opus 5.5 sessions to break even | Sonnet 5.5 sessions | Fable 5.1 sessions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pro, $20 | about 7 a month | about 12 | Not covered: Fable runs on usage credits at API rates |
| Max 5x, $100 | about 34 | about 56 | about 15 |
| Max 20x, $200 | about 67 | about 112 | about 30 |
Anthropic's own average gives the same picture from another angle. Its Claude Code cost docs say "the average cost is around $13 per developer per active day and $150-250 per developer per month, with costs remaining below $30 per active day for 90% of users." At $13 a day, Pro is paid off in under two active days, Max 5x in about eight, and Max 20x in about 16.
Heavy users report much wider gaps. In April an r/ClaudeCode user posted that their last 30 days on a $100 Max plan would have cost $1,593 through the API. That is a self-reported figure from before the Opus 5.5 price cut, but the direction matches Anthropic's averages.
The catch is that a plan only wins if its limits cover your work. Anthropic does not publish the number of tokens in a five-hour session or a week, and says it may also limit usage "in other ways, such as weekly and monthly caps or model and feature usage" (Max plan help). If you keep hitting the weekly limit, the real comparison is your plan plus whatever you spend on usage credits.
How do you calculate your own breakeven?
Claude Code already does the hard part for you.
- Run
/usagein Claude Code after a typical session. The Session block shows a "Total cost" figure. Anthropic's docs say Claude Code "computes the dollar figure locally from token counts at list price", and that on Pro and Max the figure "isn't relevant for billing purposes". In other words, it is what that session would have cost on the API. - Add up a normal week. The total resets when
/clearstarts a new session, so note it before you clear. - Multiply by 4.3 to get a monthly API-equivalent figure.
- Compare it with $20, $100 and $200. If your monthly figure is above the price of a plan and you rarely hit that plan's limits, the plan is cheaper.
On a plan, the same /usage screen also shows which skills, subagents, plugins and MCP servers used your allowance, and flags long context or cache misses when one accounts for 10% or more of recent usage. That is the quickest way to find what is eating your limit.
What happens when you hit your plan limit?
Work stops until the limit resets, unless you turn on usage credits. Anthropic's usage credits page says:
- Usage past your limit "will be billed at standard API pricing rates", separately from your subscription.
- You prepay funds, can set a monthly spend limit or choose unlimited, and can turn on auto-reload. There is a daily redemption limit of $2,000.
- Five-hour session limits keep resetting as usual.
So a plan never costs more than the API for the same tokens: the included usage is the discount, and anything past it is billed at API rates anyway. The only way a plan loses money is if you pay for it and do not use it.
Limits are not always easy to read. On 3 October a Max 5x subscriber opened a GitHub issue reporting that their weekly bar was draining about 15% a day on Opus 5.5 at medium effort with light work, faster than a heavier previous week. It is one user's report and Anthropic had not responded at the time of writing, but it is a reason to watch the usage page in your first weeks on a new model.
Does Fable change the maths?
Yes, more than anything else on this page. Anthropic's Fable help page says:
- Max plans include Fable 5 and Fable 5.1: "You can use up to 50% of your weekly usage limits on Fable models at no extra cost." They use your limits faster than other models.
- Pro plans do not include Fable. It runs on usage credits from the first message, at the API's $10 and $50 per million tokens.
If Fable is the model you want for long agent runs, Pro gives you nothing over the API for that work. Max is the only individual plan where Fable comes out of a flat fee.
When is the Claude API the better choice?
- You use Claude a few times a month. Under about seven Opus-sized sessions a month, metered billing can come in under $20.
- The work runs unattended in shared environments. Anthropic's legal page says developers building products or services for other people "should use API key authentication", and subscription login is meant for "ordinary use" of Claude Code and Anthropic's own apps.
- You need volume without weekly limits. The API has rate limits but no weekly allowance, and the Batch API halves the price of work that can wait.
- You want Fable on a small budget. On Pro you pay API rates for Fable anyway.
- You care about consumer versus commercial terms. Claude's pricing page lists model training as opt-out on Free, Pro and Max. API use runs under Anthropic's commercial terms.
One more thing to check if you are paying both: Anthropic warns that when an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable is set, Claude Code uses it instead of your subscription. Remove it and run /login to make sure your plan is doing the work. Our setup guide walks through it.
Do apps that use your Claude plan cost extra?
Not for the model, while you stay inside your limits. Anthropic's Agent SDK help page still reads, as of 5 October: "For now, nothing has changed: Claude Agent SDK, claude -p, and third-party app usage still draw from your subscription's usage limits." The planned move to a separate monthly credit, announced for 15 June, remains paused.
That only applies to apps on Anthropic's permitted route: apps that drive the official Claude Code you signed in to yourself, such as Conductor, T3 Code, Zed, Cline and Happy. Which apps qualify, and which do not, is covered app by app in Can I use my Claude subscription in other apps?. The full list is on apps that use your Claude subscription, and our ranked picks across Claude and ChatGPT are in the best AI agent apps that run on your plan.

Questions people ask
- Is a Claude subscription cheaper than the API?
- For regular agent or Claude Code use, usually yes. Anthropic's Claude Code docs put average enterprise API spend at about $13 per developer per active day and $150 to $250 a month. Pro costs $20 a month and Max $100 or $200, so a steady user passes the Pro price in about two active days.
- Is Claude Max worth it compared with the API?
- On Opus 5.5 list prices, our sample one-hour agent session costs about $3.00 through the API. Max 5x ($100) pays for itself after about 34 such sessions a month and Max 20x ($200) after about 67, provided the plan's five-hour and weekly limits cover your work.
- Is Claude Max worth it for Fable?
- Max is the cheapest way to use Fable regularly. Anthropic includes Fable 5 and 5.1 on Max up to 50% of your weekly limits. On Pro, Fable is not in the plan at all and runs on usage credits billed at API rates ($10 input and $50 output per million tokens).
- What happens when I hit my Claude plan limit?
- Work stops until the five-hour session or weekly limit resets, unless you turn on usage credits. Usage credits are billed separately at standard API rates, and you can set a monthly spend limit in Settings, Usage.
- How do I see what my Claude Code usage would cost on the API?
- Run /usage in Claude Code. Its Session block shows a dollar figure that Claude Code computes from your token counts at list price. On a Pro or Max plan you are not billed that amount, which makes it a ready-made API-equivalent number to compare with your plan price.
- When is the Claude API the better choice?
- When you use Claude lightly, when the work runs unattended in shared environments such as CI, when you are building a product that serves other people (Anthropic's terms say to use an API key for that), or when you want Fable on a Pro-level budget.
