Can I use my Claude subscription in other apps?

Yes, through Claude Code: apps may drive the Claude Code you log in to, not their own Claude login. App-by-app answers for Cursor, Zed, OpenClaw and more.

By BringYourSubs4 min read

Yes, as long as the app runs the official Claude Code and you log in to Claude Code yourself. Anthropic's terms allow that, including when another app or platform hosts Claude Code for you. What they do not allow is an app offering its own "Sign in with Claude" or asking for your Claude session token. Usage through the permitted route counts toward the same limits as Claude chat and Claude Code.

This page lists the answer for the apps people ask about most, each with the source. Checked on 3 October 2026; the rules changed four times this year, so check the date.

What Anthropic's terms say

The rule is on Anthropic's Claude Code legal and compliance page. Subscription login "is intended exclusively for purchasers of Claude Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscription plans and is designed to support ordinary use of Claude Code and other native Anthropic applications."

For app makers: "Anthropic does not permit third-party developers to offer Claude.ai login into their own applications, or to route requests through Free, Pro, or Max plan credentials on behalf of their users. Moreover, developers may not collect, store, or intermediate Claude.ai credentials or session tokens."

And the exception that makes other apps possible: the rule does not "prevent an end user from signing in to the unmodified Claude Code binary with their own Claude subscription, including where a platform hosts Claude Code."

Put plainly: the app may run Claude Code. You log in to Claude Code. The app never handles your Claude login.

App by app: does it work on your Claude plan?

App Works on your Claude plan? How Source
Claude Code (terminal, desktop, web) Yes Anthropic's own product Anthropic help
VS Code, JetBrains IDEs Yes Claude Code extension, same login Anthropic help
Cursor Only through Claude Code Claude Code extension or claude in the terminal. Cursor's own models bill your Cursor plan Anthropic help ("Cursor and other VS Code forks")
Antigravity Only through Claude Code Same as Cursor: it is a VS Code fork. Claude models in Antigravity's own picker come with your Google plan, not your Claude plan Anthropic help
Zed Yes Claude Agent (via ACP) or Claude Code in a terminal thread. Zed's built-in agent has no Claude plan option Zed docs
Cline Yes Claude Code provider; needs Claude Code installed and logged in Cline docs
OpenClaw Yes, through Claude Code "Claude CLI" route reuses your Claude Code login. Avoid its community "Claude Max API proxy" OpenClaw docs
Hermes Agent Yes, experimental Official plugin drives the unmodified Claude Code CLI; needs Hermes 0.21.4 or newer Hermes plugin page
Conductor, T3 Code, Happy, Munder Difflin Yes They drive the Claude Code logged in on your computer Each listing quotes the maker
OpenCode No Removed at Anthropic's request; OpenCode says Anthropic "explicitly prohibits" the plugins that add it back OpenCode docs
GitHub Copilot No Copilot's Claude agent runs on your Copilot subscription. Running Claude Code through a proxy to Copilot is unofficial GitHub docs
Pi Not on your plan limits Pi's own Claude login shows Anthropic's notice that third-party usage "draws from extra usage and is billed per token". Community extensions that change this are unofficial Pi issue #3372

What changed in 2026

  • 20 February. Anthropic updated its legal page to say consumer-plan login may not be used in other products (The Register). OpenCode removed Claude Pro and Max sign-in.
  • 4 April. Claude plans stopped covering third-party harnesses such as OpenClaw that used a Claude login directly; that usage moved to extra usage, billed separately (VentureBeat).
  • 13 May. Anthropic announced that from 15 June, Agent SDK, claude -p and third-party app usage would move to a monthly credit billed at API rates (Zed's summary).
  • 15 June. Anthropic paused that change. Its help page now says: "For now, nothing has changed: Claude Agent SDK, claude -p, and third-party app usage still draw from your subscription's usage limits." It says it will share any new plan before it takes effect.
  • By late September. OpenClaw and Hermes Agent both document routes that run the official Claude Code instead of a direct Claude login.

Some pricing articles dated September 2026 still describe the 15 June credit as live. Anthropic's own page says it is not.

Does it cost extra?

Not for the model, while you are inside your plan's limits. Anthropic says Pro and Max limits are shared across Claude and Claude Code, and usage through Claude Code in another app counts toward them. Past your limit, work stops until the limit resets, unless you turn on usage credits, which are billed at API rates. The app may charge separately for its own features. For the maths of plan versus API, see the cost comparison.

How to tell if an app is on the permitted route

  1. It sends you to Claude Code's login, or asks you to install Claude Code first. Good sign.
  2. It opens its own "Sign in with Claude" window or asks you to paste a token. That is the pattern Anthropic's page prohibits.
  3. It asks for an Anthropic API key. Allowed, but that is pay-per-token API billing, not your plan.
  4. Check your own machine. If ANTHROPIC_API_KEY is set, Claude Code uses it instead of your subscription, Anthropic warns. Remove it and run /login.

Questions people ask

Can I use my Claude Pro or Max subscription in other apps?
Yes, if the app runs the official Claude Code that you log in to with your own Claude account. Anthropic's terms allow that, including when another platform hosts Claude Code. They do not allow apps to offer their own Claude.ai login or to route requests through your plan credentials.
Can I use my Claude subscription in Cursor?
Only through Claude Code. Anthropic's help page says Pro and Max cover Claude Code in Cursor and other VS Code forks: install the Claude Code extension or run claude in Cursor's terminal. Cursor's own model picker bills your Cursor plan.
Can I use my Claude subscription in OpenCode?
No. OpenCode's provider docs say Anthropic explicitly prohibits the plugins that add Claude Pro or Max sign-in. OpenCode supports ChatGPT Plus and Pro instead.
Can I use my Claude subscription with OpenClaw or Hermes Agent?
Yes, through Claude Code. OpenClaw's Claude CLI route reuses your existing Claude Code login on the same machine. Hermes Agent has an official plugin, marked experimental, that drives the unmodified Claude Code CLI.
Do third-party apps use my plan limits or extra usage?
Apps that drive Claude Code or the Agent SDK draw from your plan's usage limits, per Anthropic's help page updated 15 June 2026. Apps that sign you in with their own Claude login are outside Anthropic's terms, and since 4 April 2026 that kind of usage has been billed as extra usage.
Can I get banned for using my Claude subscription in another app?
Anthropic says it may enforce its credential rules without prior notice. The route it explicitly permits is signing in to the unmodified Claude Code yourself. Proxies, token-copying plugins and apps that ask for your Claude session token are the pattern it prohibits.
