Claude's free limit reset expires 22 October: when to use it, and why Opus 5.5 limits still run out

Claude Pro, Max and Team plans have one saved limit reset that expires 22 Oct 2026. How it works, when to spend it, and why Opus 5.5 can still drain limits.

Claude Pro, Max and Team subscribers each have one saved limit reset that expires on 22 October 2026. Pressing "Reset for free" in Settings, Usage on claude.ai or Claude Desktop sets either your five-hour session limit or your weekly limit back to full, depending on which reset your account shows. It cannot be undone, it does not move your weekly reset day, and it is lost if you downgrade or cancel first.

Anthropic shipped the reset with Claude Opus 5.5 on 22 September. Below is what Anthropic's own pages say about it (we re-read them on 11 October 2026), when it is worth spending, and why many people report that Opus 5.5 still drains their limits quickly.

What is the Claude "Reset for free" button?

It is a one-off limit reset that Anthropic stored on paid accounts at the Opus 5.5 launch. The launch post says Anthropic is "providing subscription users a rate limit reset, which you can now save and use whenever you choose." In Settings, Usage it appears under a Resets heading with the line "Get extra wiggle room to explore Opus 5.5. Expires Oct 22", as Hacker News users quoted it on launch day.

Anthropic's limit resets help page sets out the rules:

Question Anthropic's answer
What does it reset? "Either your five-hour session limit or your weekly usage limit", depending on the reset shown
Does my weekly cycle move? No. "Your weekly limits still reset on their usual day and time"
Do I have to hit a limit first? No
Can I undo it? No
Where is the expiry? In Settings, Usage. Anthropic's ClaudeDevs account gave 22 October
Does it refund extra usage? No. It does not refund usage credits already billed or change your credit balance
What if I downgrade or cancel? The reset is no longer available

Earlier coverage disagreed on the first row. XDA Developers reported that its button reset both the weekly and the five-hour limit, while Memeburn wrote that Anthropic had not said whether the weekly bar clears. Anthropic's help page now answers it: it depends on the card your account shows, so read that card before you press it.

Who gets the reset, and where do you press it?

Anthropic's ClaudeDevs account wrote on 22 September: "If you're on Pro, Max, or Team, your reset is available today in Settings → Usage. Apply it any time until Oct 22." The Free plan is not included.

To use it:

  1. Open Settings, Usage on the web or in Claude Desktop.
  2. Click "Reset for free" in the Resets section.
  3. Confirm with "Reset for free" again.

The same button appears on the message you see when you reach a limit. It is not in Claude Code in your terminal or IDE, and not on Claude Mobile. Because your limits are shared across your account, the refill also applies to Claude Code and to every app that runs Claude Code on your plan, such as Cline, Conductor, Zed, T3 Code and Happy. The Claude hub lists the rest.

When should you spend it before 22 October?

A reset is worth the most when it saves real waiting time. Some practical rules, based on Anthropic's description:

  • Spend it when you are blocked, not early. You do not need to hit a limit first, but pressing it at 20% used wastes most of it.
  • Check which limit it refills. If your card refills the weekly limit, the best moment is when you hit the weekly cap days before your usual reset day. If it refills the five-hour session, use it in the middle of a long agent run that would otherwise stop.
  • Do not hold it past 21 October. An unused reset is gone after its expiry, and Anthropic has not said whether this kind of offer will come back. XDA suggested it may return with future launches, but that is a guess.
  • Use it before a plan change. If you have a downgrade scheduled, apply the reset first. Anthropic says a downgrade or cancellation removes it, and issue #98664 on the Claude Code repo reports it being applied automatically, without a click, when a Max 20x to Max 5x downgrade took effect on 1 October.

Did Opus 5.5 raise Claude plan limits?

Yes, in two ways, and the numbers are smaller than the launch headline. The launch post says Opus 5.5 costs 40% less than Opus 5 on typical API workloads, and that Anthropic is "increasing five-hour usage limits on Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans." It does not give a figure for that increase.

For subscribers the measured number is 25%. Anthropic's post on task costs says the lower Opus 5.5 price "is passed on to your limits, including cached context, so they go about 25% further than on Opus 5," and that the extra 60% cut on cache reads "is an API price change." ClaudeDevs put it the same way: "your 5-hour and weekly limits go 25% further."

So a cache-heavy agent session that is 60% cheaper on input through the API is roughly 25% cheaper against your plan. Our Claude subscription vs API guide works through what that does to the breakeven point.

Why does Opus 5.5 still drain my weekly limit?

Because effort moves usage more than price does. Anthropic's task-cost post says Opus 5.5 "always thinks before it replies", thinking is billed as output, and "at a given level, Opus 5.5 thinks more per turn than Opus 5, most of all at xhigh and max." The default effort on Opus 5.5 is medium, one level below Opus 5's default of high, and Anthropic advises: "don't carry over a level you chose for Opus 5."

Users report the effect. On the Hacker News launch thread one Max 5x subscriber wrote that with the same tasks as on Opus 5 they now "hit the 5-hour limit in under an hour." On GitHub, issue #99204 (opened 3 October, still open) describes a Max 5x weekly bar rising about 15% a day on Opus 5.5 at medium effort with light use, a Fable bar rising without Fable being selected, and "No resets right now" showing on the usage page. Anthropic has not replied on that issue as of 11 October, so treat it as one user's report, not a confirmed bug.

What you can check yourself, using Anthropic's own advice:

  1. Run /effort status in Claude Code. If it is set to high, xhigh or max from your Opus 5 days, try /effort medium.
  2. Avoid switching effort mid-session. Memeburn notes that changing effort clears the cached conversation, which costs usage to rebuild.
  3. Run /usage at the end of a task to see input, output and cache figures.
  4. Turn off tools and connectors you do not need. Anthropic's usage limits page says they are token-intensive.
  5. Start new conversations instead of very long ones. The same page says automatic context management in long chats uses more of your limit.

Does the reset matter for apps that run on my Claude plan?

Yes, because it is account-wide. Any app that drives the official Claude Code you signed in to draws from the same five-hour and weekly limits as claude.ai, so a refilled limit is a refilled limit everywhere. That is also why heavy agent apps, such as parallel-agent tools, are the most likely to run into the weekly cap.

The reset does not change which apps may use your plan. Anthropic's terms still allow apps that run the unmodified Claude Code you log in to yourself, and do not allow apps that offer their own Claude.ai login. Our guide on using your Claude subscription in other apps covers that rule app by app, and how to run other apps on your plan shows how to check that Claude Code is billing your plan rather than an API key.

The short version

  • One saved reset per Pro, Max or Team account, expiring 22 October 2026.
  • Press it on claude.ai or Claude Desktop, not in the terminal.
  • Read the card: it refills either the five-hour or the weekly limit.
  • Spend it when blocked, and before any downgrade.
  • If limits still feel tight on Opus 5.5, check your effort level first.

Questions people ask

When does the Claude 'Reset for free' offer expire?
The reset Anthropic handed out with Opus 5.5 expires on 22 October 2026. Anthropic's ClaudeDevs account said on 22 September that Pro, Max and Team users can apply it any time until 22 October, and the exact expiry is shown in Settings, Usage.
Does the reset clear my weekly limit or only the five-hour session?
It depends on the reset you were given. Anthropic's help page says that, depending on the reset shown, either your five-hour session limit or your weekly limit goes back to full. Read the wording on the card in Settings, Usage before you press it. Your weekly limit still resets on its usual day and time afterwards.
Can I use the reset from Claude Code in my terminal?
No. Anthropic says the 'Reset for free' button is not available in Claude Code in the terminal or IDE, or on Claude Mobile. Use claude.ai in a browser or Claude Desktop. Limits are shared across your account, so after the reset Claude Code and any app that runs Claude Code start from a full limit too.
What happens to the reset if I downgrade or cancel?
Anthropic's help page says that if you downgrade or cancel before using the reset, it is no longer available. One open Claude Code issue (#98664) reports the reset being consumed at the moment a scheduled Max 20x to 5x downgrade took effect, so use it before a plan change if you want the benefit.
Why do my limits still run out on Opus 5.5 if it is cheaper?
Anthropic says plan limits go about 25% further on Opus 5.5 because its per-token price is lower. But Opus 5.5 always thinks before it answers, and thinking counts as output. At high, xhigh or max effort a task can use more tokens than it did on Opus 5. Anthropic's advice is to start at the default medium effort.
