Build a web app in v0 with your ChatGPT plan: setup and costs
Use ChatGPT Plus or Pro in v0, check which requests still need v0 credits, and take a web app from a bounded brief to a reviewed release.

v0 can use your ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscription for eligible AI responses while you build a web app. It still needs a v0 credit balance: every AI request carries a platform fee, and images, delegated subagents and other supporting work use credits separately.
Checked 6 November 2026 against Vercel's ChatGPT connection guide. This is a documented setup and release checklist, not a hands-on benchmark or a promise that an app can ship without engineering review. Start with the v0 listing or compare other ChatGPT-plan apps.
How do you connect your ChatGPT plan to v0?
Open v0's credit balance menu in the header. Select Use ChatGPT plan, then Continue with ChatGPT. Complete the provider's sign-in and approve subscription sharing, then enable the plan in v0. Signing in alone is not the final step.
Choose a supported OpenAI model and Standard speed. The current guide lists GPT-6 Astra, GPT-5.6 Sol and GPT-5.6 Luna. Fast mode is unavailable on this funding route; using it requires v0 credits. Check the live guide again before starting a long project because model availability can change.
Two interface labels help verify the billing choice: the header shows ChatGPT, and the model picker shows Using ChatGPT plan. Check both before a substantial generation. A connected account does not imply every model or tool uses that account's allowance.
OpenAI's app-usage guidance explains provider-side controls. Our per-app usage guide covers caps and disconnecting. Treat an app cap as a boundary within an allowance, not a fresh allocation of compute.
Which costs remain after you enable the plan?
Separate the cost of building from the cost of operating what you build.
| Work or service | What to budget for |
|---|---|
| Eligible supported-model AI responses in v0 | ChatGPT plan usage, subject to limits |
| Platform fee on each AI request | v0 credits, even with plan sharing enabled |
| Image generation, editing and regeneration | v0 credits |
| Delegated subagents and supporting agent work | v0 credits |
| Hosting, database and external services for your app | Their own service terms and bills |
| AI features used by visitors after release | Verify the deployed app's funding path separately |
Vercel explicitly warns that an empty v0 balance may prevent messages even when ChatGPT is enabled. If the model allowance is available but a request will not start, check the v0 balance before repeatedly reconnecting your account.
There is no sourced fixed platform-fee amount in the connection guide, so do not estimate a whole project's price from a token-rate table alone. Record v0 credit consumption and ChatGPT usage separately during your first bounded build.
What should your first web-app brief include?
Vercel describes v0 as supporting interfaces, backend connections and deployment, rather than only static mockups. That capability does not decide your product's data model or access rules for you.
A useful first exercise is a fictional equipment-booking app for one small team. Specify three screens: available equipment, a booking form and your own reservations. Define whether bookings require approval, who can cancel them and what happens when two people request the same slot. Use invented sample records, not customer data.
Write completion conditions before asking for code:
- A signed-out visitor cannot read reservations.
- One member cannot edit another member's booking.
- Conflicting bookings return an understandable error.
- Refreshing the page preserves saved data.
- The form works at phone width and without a mouse.
These are proposed tests, not results we obtained in v0. Ask the builder to identify any condition still simulated in the preview. A realistic screen with sample rows is not evidence of a working database or authorization policy.
How do you move from preview to a release you can review?
Keep the first revision small. Build the main workflow, inspect the generated code, and exercise the failure cases before adding payments, external messages or a large integration set. Vercel's overview describes both production deployment and opening a pull request for review; choose a reviewable route when the app changes real records.
Before connecting production services, check where secrets are stored. A browser must not receive an administrator credential merely because the UI needs to save a booking. Test access enforcement on the server or database, not just whether a button is hidden.
Keep a known-good revision and identify who can restore it. Review deployment settings, environment variables and database permissions separately from the prompt history. Test with a non-owner account, since a workspace owner's successful preview can hide missing access controls for ordinary users.
Your ChatGPT plan funds qualifying assistance during development. It is not evidence that visitors' future AI requests, database storage or hosting are covered. For the difference between subscription-backed assistance and separately billed API requests, see BYOK versus bring your own subscription.
What happens if you run out of allowance mid-build?
Vercel says v0 pauses generation and saves progress when you reach the ChatGPT usage limit. You can wait for availability or select Continue with v0 credits. It does not automatically move those AI responses to credits; you must explicitly change the billing option.
Distinguish that pause from the separate v0 credit requirement described above. Both balances matter, but they pay for different work. Before continuing a large revision, confirm the active billing label and whether you intend to use credits.
If your goal is an installable mobile app rather than a web app, read the separate mobile-app building guide. Do not choose a builder solely because it can display a mobile-sized preview.
Questions people ask
- Can I use ChatGPT Plus to build in v0?
- Yes. Vercel documents Plus and Pro support. Enable plan sharing, choose a supported OpenAI model and use Standard speed.
- Is v0 free when I connect ChatGPT?
- No. A platform fee applies to each AI request, and images, delegated subagents and supporting agent work still use v0 credits. Keep a credit balance available.
- Does v0 automatically switch to credits at my ChatGPT limit?
- Vercel says it pauses and saves progress. Continuing AI responses with v0 credits requires an explicit billing-option change.
- Does my plan pay for the deployed app too?
- Do not assume so. Building assistance, hosting, databases and any AI requests made by the released application are separate cost decisions.
